The Train That Never Stops is an effectively claustrophobic supernatural thriller that turns a late-night subway ride into a study of grief, surveillance, and the peril of closure. Its strongest asset is the prose itself: the opening prologue’s pseudo-archival voice, with its Lenape account, Dutch maps, and Transit Authority reports, gives the novel an eerie historical depth before Sebastian Voss even boards at Cortland Street. From there, the book sustains a relentless atmosphere through vivid sensory details—the temperature shifts, the “wrong” silence, the darkness that seems to have appetite—and through a structure that escalates cleanly from anomaly to revelation.

Equally persuasive is the novel’s thematic intelligence. Sebastian’s bereavement over Elena is not decorative backstory; it is the mechanism by which the entity feeds. The idea that “unfinished” emotional life can be both vulnerability and protection gives the story more than standard monster-chase momentum. Chapters such as “The Wife,” “The Prayer,” and “The Last Offer” sharpen that premise into a moral argument: closure is tempting, but not every ending is benign. Delia’s refusal-prayer and the passengers’ decision to remain oriented toward what is ahead are especially memorable because they translate theme into action.

That said, the book’s intensity is also its main limitation. The novel leans heavily on repeated explanatory dialogue, and its metaphysical rules sometimes arrive in dense blocks of exposition. Readers who prefer restraint, ambiguity, or a quieter psychological horror may find the constant theorizing and dramatic declarations a bit over-specified. The stylized, highly verbal narration can also feel uniform across characters.

Still, for readers who enjoy elevated horror, urban folklore, and grief-driven suspense with a strong conceptual spine, this is a compelling and unusually thoughtful ride. I would recommend it most strongly to fans of literary supernatural fiction who do not mind a high-concept premise carried at full intensity.
