I CAN'T STOP THIS CAR
by Kaydence Reed
I Can’t Stop This Car turns a familiar horror premise—a driver trapped on an impossible road—into a story about grief, guilt, and the limits of control. Marcus Hale’s afterlife begins with a small, consequential lapse: he looks at a text from his son while driving. The abrupt shift from a near-miss to a supernatural ride is an effective opening, and the early chapters sustain unease through concrete details: the nonexistent Lost Mills Road, the grave marker in the clearing, and passengers whose faces and smells are subtly wrong.
The episodic structure gives each ride a different emotional register. The child resembling Tyler makes Marcus’s loss painfully immediate; the furious driver, after 2,847 rides, gives the book’s bleakest vision of what endless repetition can do. Later, the cheerful passenger in the rain offers a quieter counterpoint. These encounters build toward the central distinction between carrying love and clinging to guilt. Sarah’s appearance makes that idea personal, while the final passenger lets Marcus extend compassion to someone else rather than merely endure his own suffering. The recurring car, app, and road imagery also provide a clear framework for the novel’s themes of habit, agency, and memory.
The story’s main limitation is its repetition. Many rides follow a similar pattern—pickup, unsettling disclosure, drop-off, another request—and characters often explain the themes directly. The dialogue sometimes restates insights the scenes have already conveyed, particularly around choice, forgetting, and acceptance. The supernatural rules remain deliberately uncertain, but the repeated claims that there is no escape, followed by a meaningful choice, can make the resolution feel more emotionally asserted than logically established. Frequent grammatical and punctuation slips in the supplied text also interrupt the otherwise accessible prose.
Readers who enjoy atmospheric supernatural horror with a strong emotional focus will find this a moving, if deliberately unresolved, journey. It is a weaker fit for those seeking tightly explained mythology or rapid plot development.
